What on Earth is Three Thing Game?
Three Thing Game is unique to Hull. It is a game development competition like no other. We run two a year, one in each semester. They start with a "Thing Auction". We give each team some "Bank of Thingland" cash which they can use to bid for "things" which will be the basis of the game that they are going to make. Then the teams have a week to make assets and design gameplay, followed by a 24 hour hackathon and then judging.
It is very popular and great fun, even for the students who are not on a game development course. The experience of working in a team to a tight deadline is very useful. It is also a great way to learn how to code, because you get to spend a solid day just writing programs. Lots of the staff in the department join in too and are around to offer help, even at three in the morning....
Some of the resulting games have gone to market and become nice little earners for their creators. It is certainly a great way to make a name for yourself. We invite game developers large and small to come along and take part too. We've had Microsoft and Sony take part, along with the MonoGame team and companies like Boss Alien.
The competition is not part of our taught course, we do it because it's fun. But it has had a huge impact on the students that have taken part over the years.
